Mountain bikes are great if you like tackling rough terrain & can really be used for anything, although there low gearing & higher weight can make them harder going & slower on road than all the other options.
Road bikes generally sacrifice upright comfort for lightweight aerodynamic speed and distance, if your going to ride with other people on road bikes you will need something similar to have a better chance of keeping up.

Hybrid is a fairly broad term in bicycles, generally it's more upright than a road bike, a Hybrid can be slightly more suited towards Road than Off Road or vice versa but will normally cope with both to different degrees, designed to be versatile.

A decent kids bike is an investment, both in your childs development and in it's significant resale value, a lightweight kids bike should also be fitted in-store to get the safest and longest lasting size possible, Smaller should mean lighter but many kids bikes weigh the same as there full size counterparts. A Frog or Scott kids bike will be a pleasure to ride for years to come.
